First things first, lodging.  I could pick out some Motel 6 type place and call it a day, but I was looking at hotels such as the
Sofitel Montreal Golden Mile, the W Montreal, Le Westin Montreal or
InterContinental Montreal.  However spending $300 was not in my budget–it was my budget.  So after a little bit of research–that you all can now benefit from–I decided to go with a vacation rental which allowed me privacy, more space and a kitchen for less money.  Sites such as VRBO.com, VacationHomeRentals.com, or the people at at RentExpert Vacation Rentals.  Personally, I went through VRBO.com and found an amazing place in Montreal right in the middle of everything.  I have a video of the entire place and pictures to show you how amazing a $150/night rental can be.  I didn’t want to go back home. 

Furthermore, this great place allowed me to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at home if I wanted.  The first day we went out to breakfast at a rather “inexpensive” breakfast joint,  this cost me $16.  The following morning we made breakfast at home with all of the same things: eggs, pastries, cottage cheese, fruit and jam.  However, this breakfast only cost me $6,  that’s a $20 savings between the two of us.

I’m sorry, I love every single one of my girlfriends, but it’s just hard when I have to set aside several thousand dollars a year, just to take part in the happiest day of THEIR lives.  No offense; you’re getting married.  Almost everyone does it sometime in their life and actually, most of us will do it more than once in our lifetime.   It’s not like you won the effing Noble Peace Prize.  I tell you what, you win that fucking peace prize and then I’ll buy you the two hundred dollar garlic press you registered for.  Deal?

So since, all of these things are near impossible to actually say to someone, I have devised another plan.  A list of go to gifts that will help each and everyone of us through wedding season, year, life.

1. DO NO OPEN A TAB  I repeat, DO NOT OPEN A TAB.  Tabs are great, but you are paying double the money for the ease of not having to pull out your wallet each time.  Please review Example A. Let’s say the average drink costs you $10 and when paying cash most people leave $1 tips per drink. So if you were to go out and have 10 drinks, you’ll probably wake up naked and not know where you are, this is not advised. However, for the sake of easy math, let’s say you had 10 drinks at $10 a piece and paid cash you would have left $1 per drink bringing you to $10 in tips.  Next let’s take Girl #2 who opens a tab when she gets to the bar, flirts with the bartender, rinses and repeats.  When she goes to close out her 10 drinks at $10 a piece, she is more likely to at least give a 15% tip, if not a 20% which I feel is more the norm now.  Girl #2 has now spent a total of $20 in tips that is double what Girl #1 spent, and actually enough to buy and entire other drink for the hot guy down at the end of the bar (not advised, I advise you to pocket that shit for your next night out).  If you go out twice a week, you are saving a total of $80/month by never opening that tab and paying with good ol’ american dollars.
2. ONLY MIX ALCOHOL WITH SUGARFREE MIXERS  If you are in college, or a recent graduate, I am going to assume that your main goal in going out is to get effed up drunk (another think not advised by Miss Assets), however if this is what you choose I am here to help.  This is where the science comes in, don’t worry, I’ll make it painless. Basically sugar makes it harder for your blood to metabolize the alcohol (which is a good thing to adults), but for you guys a bad thing.  So Tip #2 is only drink your hard alcohol with sugarless liquids, which basically include anything diet, diet coke or pepsi, still water, and soda water (steer clear of the tonic).  Let’s just say if it usually takes 3 captain and cokes to get your tipsy, you’ll only need 2 captain and diets to get the job done.  Don’t tell you parents I gave you this tip.
3. GO HYBRID – That’s my new, more sophisticated way of saying “pre-party” without sounding like a junior transfer.  Basically mix it up.  Have a drink at home, take a cab to the bar, have another there, walk home, have another.  Best of both worlds, you save money, but remember do not say “pre-party” unless you want to sound like a late-90’s frat boy.
4. BEFRIEND YOUR BARTENDER — Yes, it’s the oldest trick in the book…because it works.  I’m not saying “use” your bartender, I’m saying actually, genuinely befriend them.  Their interesting, they know everyone there and you’ll get cheaper to completely free drinks.
